Dryer Not Heating

A dryer that runs but does not produce heat can have several possible causes. Some are simple things you can check yourself, while others involve electrical, gas, heating, or control components that should be diagnosed by an appliance repair professional.

Why Is My Dryer Running but Not Heating?

When the drum turns normally but clothes stay cold or damp, the problem is usually somewhere in the dryer’s heating system, power supply, airflow, or temperature controls. Gas and electric dryers create heat differently, so the likely causes are not always the same.

Safe Things to Check First

Common Dryer Heating Problems

If the basic checks above do not solve the problem, the dryer may have a failed heating element, thermal fuse, thermostat, temperature sensor, igniter, gas valve component, or electronic control. A restricted dryer vent can also cause poor heating or repeated overheating-related failures.

Gas Dryer Not Heating

A gas dryer uses an ignition system and gas burner to create heat. If the drum runs but there is no heat, a technician may need to inspect components such as the igniter, flame sensor, gas valve coils, thermostats, thermal protection devices, and burner operation.

Because these components involve gas and ignition, internal gas-system diagnosis is best left to a qualified appliance repair professional.

Electric Dryer Not Heating

Electric dryers typically use a heating element supplied by a 240-volt circuit. A dryer can sometimes continue to run even when the heating portion of the electrical supply is interrupted. If the breakers are properly set and the dryer still produces no heat, the heating element, thermal fuse, thermostat, wiring, or controls may require testing.

Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry

A dryer that produces some heat but needs multiple cycles may have an airflow problem rather than a complete heating failure. A clogged lint path, crushed vent hose, long or restricted vent run, or blocked exterior vent can slow drying and place additional stress on the dryer.

When to Schedule Dryer Repair

If the dryer still does not heat after checking the cycle settings, lint filter, vent opening, and accessible power or gas supply, professional diagnosis is the next step. Cannon Appliance provides dryer repair throughout Redwood City and the San Francisco Peninsula.

We service many major appliance brands and can diagnose both gas and electric dryer heating problems. You can schedule appliance service or call (650) 366-8444.
