A dishwasher that will not drain can leave standing water in the bottom of the tub, create odors, or prevent the next wash cycle from running correctly. The cause may be as simple as a blocked filter or drain path, or it may involve the drain pump, hose, controls, or another internal component.
Some dishwashers normally leave a small amount of water below the filter area, but visible standing water across the bottom of the tub usually means the drain system is not working properly.
If the basic checks do not solve the problem, possible causes include a blocked drain hose, clogged filter or sump area, failed drain pump, check valve problem, control issue, or improper drain connection.
A humming sound during the drain portion of the cycle can indicate that the drain pump is trying to operate but cannot move water normally. Debris, a mechanical obstruction, or a failed pump may need to be inspected.
Slow draining can point to a partially restricted hose, filter, sink connection, air gap, or disposal connection. Repeated slow draining should be corrected before it leads to standing water or poor wash performance.
If the dishwasher still will not drain after checking the filter, sink connection, disposal, and visible drain hose, professional diagnosis is the next step. Cannon Appliance provides dishwasher repair throughout Redwood City and the San Francisco Peninsula.
